Every Client’s Worst Nightmare
Hair is important to us, and the only thing more crucial than its maintenance is finding the right person to care for it. Some hairdressers have a reputation for not listening to their clients or overcharging for mediocre services, but unfortunately, that’s the least of your worries. Let’s dive into a few red flags to keep an eye on!
1. They Don’t Listen
You want to build a good relationship with your hairdresser, and that often comes with advice or ideas for what looks best. However, the customer is paying, and it’s their hair, which means they have the final say. If your hairdresser won’t budge on their suggestions, it’s time to find a new salon.
2. They Don’t Inquire
A good hairdresser asks questions. What do you want? What length would you like? Are you willing to look at other colors? What’s your routine like? They should get basic information before they start snipping, and if they don’t, it’s a red flag.
3. They Overcharge You
It’s hard to know which prices are over the top and which ones keep it modest. But you can usually tell the difference. If you feel like the price tag doesn’t reflect the work, you can always compare it against prices in the area.
4. They Upsell You
Some salons want you to buy their stock—it’s not about providing the best tools or shampoos, it’s about stealing your money. Keep an eye out for upselling tactics. You don’t need the big bottle. You don’t need more than one item. And you definitely shouldn’t feel pressured.

5. No Communication
As we mentioned, a good hairdresser asks questions. They also want to build a relationship with you; a good time for that is when you’re in the chair. If they don’t ask about your life or keep things light, it can make for an awkward encounter.
