5 Symptoms of Eczema

Itchy, Inflamed Skin

Eczema, a type of dermatitis, is a fairly common skin condition, affecting more than 31 million Americans. But it can sometimes be tricky to spot whether you have it or not. The most classic symptoms are itchiness and redness, but eczema can show up in other ways as well. Here are five signs to watch out for.

1. Itching

The most classic sign of eczema is itching. This is the kind of itchiness that feels unbearable and intense, and it can get worse at night, after showering, or post-workout. The only way you may find relief is to apply a cool gel to soothe the affected spot or to apply a prescriptive ointment.

2. Redness & Inflammation

Eczema often causes red, inflamed skin. These patches may or may not be intensely itchy, but they can look extremely irritated or swollen. Scratching them only makes things worse and may even cause the affected area to spread.

3. Dry, Scaly Patches

When eczema isn’t treated, it can lead to dry, scaly patches that make the skin feel rough to the touch. These areas may also be irritated, inflamed, or intensely itchy. Without a moisturizer or soothing ointment, the dryness can cause cracks and even bleeding.

4. Leather-Like Skin

Over time, as the cycle keeps repeating—scratching leading to irritation and back again—the skin can thicken and become leathery. In some cases, these patches may even become discolored. Long-term scratching can also result in scarring.

5. Small Blisters

In severe cases, eczema can cause fluid-filled bumps to appear, which can be extremely itchy. Scratching these areas can result in these tiny blisters popping and leaking—which only makes the problem worse.
