5 Reasons Your Hair Is Always Oily

5 Reasons Your Hair Is Always Oily

Why Your Roots Never Seem to Get the Memo

Few frustrations are as persistent as oily hair! Slick locks can feel unfair, especially when you’re clearly making an effort, but we do have a silver lining to tell you about: it’s understandable, and it’s fixable! Oil usually comes down to a mix of habits, scalp behavior, and plain old biology, so let’s break down a few reasons why it happens so often.

1. Your Scalp Naturally Produces More Oil

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the most basic one: your scalp may just be more generous with oil. Sebum is there for a reason (it protects your scalp and your hair), but some people produce more of it by default. There’s not much you can do about that!

2. Washing Too Often

Believe it or not, shampooing every day can actually make matters worse. When you strip away oil too aggressively, your scalp responds by producing more in an effort to restore balance. Next thing you know, all that good-natured washing leaves you stranded.

3. You’re Touching It Too Much

Hey, we all touch our hair throughout the day! But you might want to pay attention to how often you’re doing it. Every time your hands pass through it, you’re transferring oils from your fingers onto your strands. It may seem harmless, but those gestures add up.

4. Product Buildup

Heavy conditioners, serums, dry shampoos, and styling creams all collect on the hair over time, leaving it far shinier than you want. In that case, what looks like excess grease may actually be a product traffic jam happening right at your roots. (Time for a clarifying shampoo!)

5. Hormones

Sometimes your scalp simply responds to changes you can’t see. Hormones influence oil production, which is why stress, menstrual cycles, or other shifts can suddenly make your hair more temperamental.
