Mistakes That Hurt Your Hair
We all want luscious, healthy locks, but could you actually be damaging your hair without even realizing it? As it turns out, the key to good hair health doesn't mean washing it every day—in fact, doing so can actually make things worse. So, what other mistakes could you be making? Here are five ways you might be unknowingly damaging your hair.
1. Overwashing Your Hair
Believe it or not, overwashing your hair can damage it. This might sound contradictory, given that you may think maintaining good hygiene might boost hair health, but washing your locks too much can dry out your scalp, stripping away its natural oils. This can lead to breakage, frizz, and brittle hair.

2. Combing Wet Hair
Your hair is at its weakest when it's wet, so combing through it at this stage can lead to breakage and split ends. Try brushing through it before you shower, or wait for a bit after showering before disentangling your locks.
3. Using Too Much Heat
If you frequently use styling tools to tame your locks, you might also risk damaging them. High heat can dry out hair and break down keratin proteins, leaving your hair brittle, dry, and prone to breakage. Make sure to always use heat protectant and to give your hair occasional breaks.
4. Too-Tight Hairstyles
Constantly wearing your hair in tight ponytails, buns, or braids could lead to breakage and hair loss at the temples or scalp. If you like wearing your locks up, you may want to do looser styles or use softer hairbands, like scrunchies, to give your roots a break.
5. Underwashing Your Hair
That's right—just as bad as it might be to wash your hair too much, the opposite is also true. Underwashing your hair encourages oil, grime, and leftover gunk from hair products to build up on the scalp, which can worsen certain conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or dandruff. Going too long without washing your hair may also slow its growth.
